Diabetes is one of the leading causes of vision loss and blindness among U.S. adults ages 18 and older. 1 out of 2 people with diabetes do not get their eyes checked each year. Often people do not get treatment in time. Getting an eye exam each year can lower your risk of vision loss by 95%.
Talk with your PCP* if you have any changes in your eyes, such as:
- Blurry vision
- Sudden black or grey specks or strings in your vision
- Changing vision
- Dark or empty spots of vision
Make sure to get a complete eye exam each year. For people with diabetes, a complete eye exam will include eye dilation. This is when a doctor will give you eye drops to make your pupil larger. Eye dilation lets your doctor see the inside of your eye and look for any changes. Often eye problems do not have any symptoms in the early stages.
