Mental health issues are higher in minority groups
Mental health issues like anxiety and depression are common – more than 1 in 5 U.S. adults live with a mental health issue. Minority groups, such as immigrants, people of color, and LGBTQIA+ people experience higher rates of mental health issues. Often, minority groups do not get help. This is due to trauma, fear of what others may think, lack of access to health care, and more.
If you have symptoms of a mental health issue, SFHP can help you get the care you need. Mental health care is confidential, and you do not need a referral from a doctor.
How to help others?
Talking with your loved ones about mental health awareness can help. When you talk about mental health, the topic becomes easier for people who need help to also talk about it. You can also encourage your loved ones to get the care they need.
Symptoms of mental health issues to watch for:
- Feeling sad for more than 2 weeks
- Loss of interest or joy in hobbies or social meetings
- Feeling tired or having no energy
- Weight gain or loss
- Changes in sleeping or eating patterns
- Trouble with focus and memory
- Trouble staying still or speaking more slowly than normal
- Extreme feeling of highs and lows
- Thoughts of hurting yourself or others
- Paranoia (not trusting others when there is no threat)
- Using drugs or drinking more
- Seeing or hearing things that are not there
- Anxiety
When to get help?
If you are struggling with mental health symptoms, talk with a friend, family, support group, or helpline.
If you have a lot of symptoms or your symptoms are causing problems at work, school, or with others, go to a doctor or mental health expert.
If you have thoughts of hurting yourself or others call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. Call a helpline (dial 988 for help), or call a doctor, or a mental health expert right away.
