A parent’s guide to healthy teeth and gums in children

Parents and caregivers play an important role in their child’s oral health. Taking care of your child’s teeth and gums sets the stage for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

Here is how to keep your kids’ teeth healthy:
  • The Power of Fluoride: Fluoride acts as a protective cover for teeth. It strengthens enamel (the outer layer of teeth). It also defends against bacteria that cause cavities. Fluoride varnish treatments can help prevent cavities and build strong teeth for your kids.
  • Start Strong: Even before your baby’s 1st tooth grows in, gently clean your infant’s gums with a soft cloth. Once teeth show, use a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste to start protecting their teeth.
  • Make a Family Brushing Routine: Brush together for 2 minutes, twice a day. Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste once your child can spit it out.
  • Flossing: As teeth start touching, start flossing. It’s important to keep the spaces between teeth clean and healthy.
  • Eat Healthy Snacks: Be an example by eating healthy snacks like fruits, veggies, and cheese. A balanced diet supports fluoride’s benefits.
  • Use Fresh Brushes: Replace your child’s toothbrush every 3-4 months. And remind them: teeth are for chewing, love your teeth, and protect them!
